Dish The Fish

Three years ago, I bought Biff a fighting beta fish for his 20th birthday.
After a long haul in the beating sun, the fish and I made it to Biff's house to give him the surprise.
It was so hot that day I was worried that the poor guy would boil in the back seat!

Biff and I instantly became parents to our little fish that we endearingly named Dish.
Dish the Fish...catchy, ain't it?

Biff took great care of our new family member.
He would feed him every morning, teach him little fish tricks by spinning the water, and wrap the guy in a heated blanket to fight the cold in the winter time.
Nothing's cuter than a man and his fish!

Recently Dish's health took a turn for the worst.
After a fish diagnosis, Dish was believed to have fish dropsy or constipation.
Biff splurged on a very expensive fish medication to cure the dropsy disease.
Biff even cooked the little guy one pea to relieve him from constipation.
Did you know that one pea could solve a fish's bathroom problems?  Neither did I...

Last night I got the phone call.
Our darling Dish the Fish passed away.
Yes, Biff and I legitimately cried over our beloved fish.

Dish on his third, and last birthday.

RIP Dish, mommy and daddy love you dearly.

  4. So sorry Jax. That really sucks. I had a red beta fish named Hunter and I swear he would start swimming fast every time I talked to him as if he were happy to hear my voice. I thought he was the coolest pet ever! I was so sad when he died, and I'm sorry for your loss of Dish. :(

  6. The one pea thing is still funny, but sorry to here the fish with the rhyming name died. Is The Viking all ready to give him a viking funeral? Still had quite the life for a fish, RIP Dish.

    1. I didn't tell the viking yet. He's too manly when it comes to the passing of animals. I'm too sad to deal with his "Just flush it" attitude. lol

Dish had a proper burial with a cross headstone and all. RIP my little mush.

  11. That's one of the reasons I don't have fish as pets. It's really hard to protect them from sickness. Most of ones we had from childhood never lasted a month. Sorry for the loss of your betta.

    1. 3 years is a long time to have a fish. I think if you put as much effort, love, and care into it then they could live a long, healthy life. Biff really did a great job of it.

  13. Sorry to hear about that. May dishes soul rest in peace. Are you having a funeral? I wore black today. Constipation could be lethal- who knew?
This is one reason I dont prefer flowers or pets, when they fade or leave us - it is hard, on the contratry may help to accept certain uncertainities.
Dish the fish, did Cat help you name him?

Biff had a proper burial for our little baby.

Dish appreciates you wearing black, even if it was unintentional. :)

No, I got Dish way before the cat. See, I was meant to Rhyme!!!

Yes, the thing about the pea is really true. If you feed a fish a pea, then the fiber should relieve it of constipation. Just one pea though. Don't want to go overboard ;)

    1. Thanks, Meggy! Normally I wouldn't get so emotional over a fish, but the story behind the little guy really got to me. Besides, Biff took such great care of it!!

It's too soon for a new fish, but maybe one day I'll show up at Biff's door again with a new friend. Maybe a gecko or something this time. ;)

  17. omg you are SO cute and please tell me how you determined that he was constipated. Did you two take him to the vet??? If so, you are so beyond cute I could cry.

Sorry that you lost him, 3 years is a long time for a pet fish I feel like!

    1. LOL, Thanks Caitlin. It was Biff doing all the hard work. He had custody over the little mush.

We did not take him to the vet. Biff did all his research and diagnosis through the web. We did cry!!!!

  18. dropsy...

hey Jax, did you do a Cosby and have a ceremony with the entire family all dressed in black and gathered around the toilet bowl to bid him a final goodbye flush?

    1. Yes, fish dropsy!!!

LOL!! Nooo, he had a proper burial in a box and with a cross. We wouldn't flush our little baby down a toilet. Then again, it all happened so quick that I didn't even make it to the services. :(

3 years is a long time. May he rest in peace!

    1. Thanks, Youngman! They did not drown themselves. Maybe they were sickly from the pet store. Or, they could have been constipated. Try the pea trick next time ;)
