BookClub: Dating Your Best Friend

One of the many questions that Fifty Shades of Grey brought to play involves dating your best friend.

During out first book club challenge, Peaches and I picked what famous actors would play the main characters in the book.  In this challenge we only portrayed Anastasia and Christian.
I picked the gorgeous Evangeline Lilly and the super sexy Chris Hemsworth.
For this challenge, we will be introducing a new character.

Jose is Anastasia's classmate.  They are the same age and the best of friends.
Jose is described as a good looking, nice guy that has been there for Anastasia for years.
Their relationship was described as very comfortable and open.
My pick to portray Jose is the very sexy Latino, Enrique Iglesias.
Ohh, yes I like it!!  Stop it...you know you do too!

Jose is openly in love with the beautiful Anastasia.
In the middle of their graduation celebration, Jose made a move on Anastasia and was turned down.  He was disappointed to find the angry Christian prying them apart.
Enrique Iglesias or Chris Hemsworth?  I wish I had this chick's problems!!

Time passed and their friendship rekindled.
They realized they would rather get passed the awkward and continue with their close bond.

How do I feel about this?
I think dating your best friend makes sense.
They know you better than anyone else and are already dedicated to making you happy.
While I agree that the best relationships start as friends first, the best relationships also ruin the best of friendships.  A friendly bond sometimes never blooms into more than that.

I dated my best friend in high school.
It made sense, but the chemistry wasn't there.
I mean, we were up each others butts every waking moment anyways!
The end result was neither of us speaking to this day.  He was mad that I never gave him enough of a chance and I was hurt that he let it ruin our friendship.
I vote no to dating your best friend.

What do you think about dating your best friend?

  1. LOVE your pick on Jose. Yea, dating your best friend would be like kissing your brother. UGH!!! Interestingly, today on my blog I gave my redneck recap of Fifty Shades of Grey (with a comic twist of course).

Ohh, I can't wait to head over and check it out. I know you must have loved it!!

  2. Chris Hemsworth, yep he is yummy as he can be.
About dating best friends, I would vote yes. I think it is better. I was totally against it and somehow changed my mind and married him too.
You dont have to put a show or pretend or be cautious and they know all your worst sides including our love interests and all. And if he still likes you, why not?

    1. Oh, Chris Hemsworth is my man!!! I'm not sure what I'm going to do during The Avengers weekend this week. Do I look at Rdow or swoon over Chris???? lol

That's so awesome that you married your best friend!!! Love happy endings :)

    2. I am more of an acquired taste anyway.

We started off with a fight and huge drama and he is totally contrast to me. Introvert, polite, smart and very intelligent and his blood group is geek+ :)
So, it was obvious that I couldn't pick up his signals for longgg time. :)
But whether boyfriend or ex-friend or to-be-friend, both got to feel that "they cant live without him/her" not like "maybe I could live with him/her".

  3. Well you have to split your time between Hemsworth and Enrique, I just get to stick with Kate, life is simple..lol

Yes dating your best friend is blah. We both thought about it, but no. The attraction just wasn't there for either of us when I attempted it in high school. The friendship was never really the same after that either. So I vote No way hosa.

Although friendship has to be there for anyone to date and keep dating, it should be easily or at least semi-easily be able to go in to something more. If not neither should waste their time.

    1. LOL I could pick both?? Oh, love that!!! hahahaha Hmph, always going after my Kate...

Sorry to hear that your friendship didn't make it through!! Neither did mine. Guess that's the price you pay for going into unmarked territories.

    2. what? What? Somebody not being attracted to our cat? How is that even possible :)))

    6. Well I could pick both to if I really wanted to, but sadly they just don't do it for me..hahaha

Yeah it is the price you pay, now the only time I hear from her is when I do something and she wants to stick her nosey self right in my busy.

Yes, not attracted to the cat, there are many Dez I will say. For they were down right scary and I had to drive them away.

Evil is all perspective, some people might like my naughty ways...LMAO

    7. Yep, I second Dez's comment.
Patt, you are beyond resistance. Can any lady resist you?

  7. ah, this is a very sensitive issue for me personally. I'm currently in love with my best friend, and have no idea what to do. I'm afraid to ruin our friendship, without which I couldn't really live, but at the same time the heart wants, needs, years, for more....
And to make things crazier, we're planning on moving in together this year... it could be the best, or the worst decision of my life... Keep fingers crossed for me, Jaxie sister.

  12. I don't think dating your BEST friend is a great idea, but being friends first definitely is. Unfortunately, once most men put you in the "friend zone" that's where you are at.

I like when my boyfriend turns in to my best friend though. That's always nice.

  15. I agree. I lost a best friend for knowing too much of her baggage. When she met a guy she was terrified that I would spill her secrets. While I was alive I was always a second away from ruining things with 'Mr Wonderful'. I hear she is unhappy still with him so things worked out good for me because I can say 'told you so'.

    1. Oh, I'm sorry to hear that!!! At least you find some consolation amongst that I told you so.

  16. I've never had a female friend before but I think dating your best friend is a good idea! What is a relationship? Its the same as a friendship but with sex! My girlfriend of eight years is my best friend, sure we didn't start off as just friends but when you have interlocking parts and get along with eachother why start off as friends when you can be so much more!

    1. A friend before dating is important, but to date your best friend is setting yourself up for failure. That's so awesome that you consider your b/f one of your friends!!

  20. I always thought your soulmate in life was supposed to also be your best friend. I have much to learn. I suck at life. Well, at least you gave your best friend in high school a chance. You at least tried. Looking at it from his perspective, he probably feels like he really blew it more than anything. I hate movies where some nerdy guy, by sheer luck happens to find some beautiful girl, who also is a closet nerd, and they fall in love. Ok, well I can only think of one movie like this off the top of my head, "Griff the Invisible." I hate them because that kind of thing never happens. I would think if a nerdy, average Joe Bag-of-Donuts wants to get the girl, it would have to be more like the reverse of "Grease" where Olivia Newton John nasties herself up, so she can win John Travolta's heart. Though I don't think this would work for the guy, because ultimately he is not being himself, and he will lose the girl eventually anyway. This is how God created romance...probably as some kind of joke.

  21. I'm sorry, you lost me at Enrique. Seriously, I think as you get older...you may find that your best friend is the one you are meant to be with. As you are a lot younger, I think (as always) that you have a good head on your shoulders and know not to mess a good thing up by dating your best friend. If it is meant to be...it will be. Time will tell.

He is all I ever wanted in a man. Is it doable? Of course! I don't regret a minute of my life with him. Now that I have been super mushy on your blog I'm going to go through up. Way to much syrup! lol

  24. I'm sorry I'm late Jax. Been at the doctors all day with the Hubby.

I'm lucky I think because I've been married to my best friend for 22 years now. The friendship really holds a marriage together because passion wanes with time. I know dating friends doesn't always work, but when it does it's fabulous.

The important part was that we were able to go back to being friends, though.

  26. very sad idea indeed. my best friend all through college and i finally started to date... without going into too much detail it ended badly and though we're "friendly" now, i basically lost someone really close to me. I often just think of that person as being a distant memory as the interactions I have him him now, mimic nothing like the close kinship we one had. sad.

and yes, i want her problem's too- kind of like Rose on Titanic. Cal or Jack? I'll take both!

  28. I knew someone who dated their best friend but the relationship didn't work. They ended up not talking and she was so distressed by the whole thing that she tried to commit suicide. It works for some people but if you're weak emotionally, it could cause you more harm than good!
